Mastopexy, or the procedure known as the ‘breast lift,’ reconstructs the breast structure so that excess fat and skin is removed, tightening the breast tissues, giving it a ‘lifted’ appearance.
Many women are faced with sagging breasts caused by breastfeeding, age, and several other factors. Shapeless breasts that droop down may look aesthetically unpleasing. A breast lift is one of the most ideal cosmetic treatments performed to correct sagging breasts.
The procedure is typically performed in order to reverse the effects of pregnancy, breastfeeding and dramatic weight loss, which can leave the breasts lacking volume, shape and symmetry. The mastopexy will also address the tissue surrounding the nipple, or areola, which oftentimes becomes stretched due to the same effects.
Are You an Ideal Candidate?
The breast lift is ideal for reshaping the breasts and giving them the lift they deserve. However, this cosmetic procedure is not suitable for everyone. Here are some constraints to consider:
- You must not have any underlying conditions that can negatively affect the results of the procedure.
- You must not have any underlying conditions that can lead to severe side effects after the surgical procedure.
- You must not have undergone any surgical procedures recently.
- You must not be a smoker.
- You must not be pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to be pregnant.
The breast lift procedure starts with a consultation with your surgeon, who will review your medical history to determine whether you are suitable for this cosmetic procedure. Your surgeon will brief you about the procedure before conducting a physical examination and making a treatment plan.
Your treatment plan will include the type and location of your incisions. Several incision options are available:
Anchor Incision – This option, also called an inverted-T incision, allows for the removal of a great deal of skin tissue to achieve a dramatic lift. A circle is first created around the areola. A vertical incision is made that comes down from the areola to meet the breast fold. Finally, a curving horizontal incision is made across the breast fold.
Lollipop Incision – This option can be used for a moderate lift. It involves the creation of an incision around the areola and a vertical incision down to meet the breast fold.
Donut Incision – This option is the least invasive technique and is best for minimal tissue removal for a minor lift. This involves two concentric circles around the areola.
Breast Lift – The Procedure
During the surgery, the treatment area is cleaned with an antiseptic and the incision points are marked. General anesthesia is administered to ensure that you do not experience any discomfort or pain during the surgical session. The incisions are made as per the treatment plan, and the breast tissues are lifted and reshaped. The surgeon may reposition the nipples and areola as well.
Once the desired breast shape is attained, any excess skin is removed before the incisions are closed with sutures.
